Le d\u00e9fi analytique est consid\u00e9rable : les limites d&rsquo;impuret\u00e9 sont exprim\u00e9es en parties par milliard (ppb) pour plusieurs compos\u00e9s chimiques, et l&rsquo;\u00e9talonnage des analyseurs qui v\u00e9rifient ces limites est loin d&rsquo;\u00eatre trivial. <\/p><h2><strong>Pourquoi les limites de puret\u00e9 des carburants \u00e0 base d&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne sont-elles si basses ?<\/strong><\/h2><p>La premi\u00e8re question que se pose tout chimiste analytique \u00e0 la lecture des teneurs maximales en impuret\u00e9s autoris\u00e9es est la suivante : <strong>pourquoi ces limites sont-elles si basses ?<\/strong><\/p><p>La r\u00e9ponse se trouve dans la mani\u00e8re dont les ing\u00e9nieurs des piles \u00e0 combustible ont \u00e9tabli ces seuils, en partant d&rsquo;une exigence de performance. Une pile \u00e0 combustible utilis\u00e9e comme g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur pour le moteur d&rsquo;un v\u00e9hicule doit fonctionner pendant 200 000 km (125 000 miles) sans entretien ni panne majeure. <\/p><p>Les impuret\u00e9s contenues dans l&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne se d\u00e9posent \u00e0 la surface de la pile \u00e0 combustible, r\u00e9duisant son activit\u00e9 catalytique et donc les performances du moteur. Comme il s&rsquo;agit d&rsquo;un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne cumulatif, les ing\u00e9nieurs ont calcul\u00e9 la masse totale admissible de chaque contaminant sur toute la dur\u00e9e de vie du v\u00e9hicule. Ce calcul a \u00e9t\u00e9 formalis\u00e9 dans la norme ISO 14687, la norme internationale d\u00e9finissant la qualit\u00e9 de l&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne pour les piles \u00e0 combustible \u00e0 membrane d&rsquo;\u00e9change de protons (PEM).  <\/p><p>La m\u00e9thode est simple : prenez la masse maximale tol\u00e9rable d&rsquo;une impuret\u00e9 donn\u00e9e, divisez-la par la quantit\u00e9 totale d&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne consomm\u00e9e pendant la dur\u00e9e de vie du v\u00e9hicule (exprim\u00e9e en masse ou en volume), et le r\u00e9sultat est la concentration maximale pour ce compos\u00e9. La logique est simple, mais elle conduit \u00e0 des concentrations \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9tat de traces, souvent de l&rsquo;ordre du ppb, voire du sub-ppb. <\/p><h2><strong>Deux d\u00e9fis majeurs pour le chimiste analyste<\/strong><\/h2><p>L&rsquo;analyste charg\u00e9 de certifier la qualit\u00e9 du carburant hydrog\u00e8ne est confront\u00e9 \u00e0 deux d\u00e9fis simultan\u00e9s :<\/p><ul><li>Trouver le bon instrument d&rsquo;analyse capable de d\u00e9tecter et de quantifier les impuret\u00e9s \u00e0 des niveaux de l&rsquo;ordre du ppb.<\/li><li>Obtenir r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement des gaz d&rsquo;\u00e9talonnage fiables \u00e0 ces m\u00eames niveaux de concentration, avec des valeurs d&rsquo;incertitude tra\u00e7ables et \u00e9troites.<\/li><\/ul><h3><strong>Le probl\u00e8me des normes commerciales pour les gaz certifi\u00e9s<\/strong><\/h3><p>Pour la plupart des compos\u00e9s r\u00e9pertori\u00e9s dans la norme ISO 14687, les gaz d&rsquo;\u00e9talonnage commerciaux certifi\u00e9s aux niveaux de traces requis n&rsquo;existent tout simplement pas &#8211; ou sont assortis de s\u00e9rieuses limitations :<\/p><ul><li>D\u00e9lais de livraison longs et variables (plusieurs semaines)<\/li><li>Dur\u00e9e de conservation courte &#8211; parfois jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 3 mois pour les compos\u00e9s traces r\u00e9actifs<\/li><li>Incertitude certifi\u00e9e \u00e9lev\u00e9e : 10 \u00e0 20%, qui se r\u00e9percute directement sur l&rsquo;incertitude de mesure du r\u00e9sultat final.<\/li><li>Co\u00fbt tr\u00e8s \u00e9lev\u00e9 : plus la concentration est faible, plus le cylindre certifi\u00e9 est cher.<\/li><\/ul><p>M\u00eame lorsque les \u00e9talons commerciaux s&rsquo;approchent des niveaux de concentration vis\u00e9s, ils peuvent diff\u00e9rer d&rsquo;un ou deux ordres de grandeur, ce qui n\u00e9cessite des \u00e9tapes de dilution suppl\u00e9mentaires qui introduisent une incertitude suppl\u00e9mentaire.<\/p><h2><strong>La solution du dilueur de gaz : Etalonnage sur site \u00e0 n&rsquo;importe quelle concentration<\/strong><\/h2><p>Cette application difficile est un cas d&rsquo;\u00e9cole pour un dilueur de gaz de pr\u00e9cision.
